HTWM5: PaSean Wilson-Ashley, The F Word & Fibroids Awareness

July is Fibroid Awareness Month and in support, I interviewed PaSean Wilson-Ashley, actress, producer and co-director of  “The F Word”, a documentary that explores the topic of fibroid tumors. It consists of a series of interviews with women sharing their unique personal stories, medical doctors’ perspectives on the cause, various treatments and common practices, and footage of a surgical procedure.

Please take a listen to the interview. PaSean shares her journey with fibroids and discovering that hysterectomies are not the ONLY solution for women.

Fibroids 101

Here are some quick facts about uterine fibroids.

So what exactly are uterine fibroids? Uterine fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) tumors that come from the muscle layer of the uterus. Fibroids usually develop during the child-bearing years, with the majority of cases being diagnosed between ages 30-39. These tumors are very common and by the time a woman reaches menopause she has an 80% chance of having one or more.

Types of Fibroids

  • Sub-serosal, which protrudes from the uterus
  • Intramural, located in the muscle of the uterus. These are by far the most common type.
  • Submucosal, located in the cavity of the uterus.

What Causes Uterine Fibroids?

Nobody knows for certain what causes fibroids but there are quite a few theories:

Hormones: Because these tumors tend to grow when exposed to hormones, hormonal stimulation is thought to play a part in their growth and formation.

during the interview, PaSean also shared some resources for more information on the topic. Feel free to check them out.

The White Dress Project is an organization dedicated to raising funds for research and awareness for uterine fibroids. Currently in 13 states and expanding.
